Flawed Teeth Cause Qualified Job Candidates to be Turned Down

It is a form of discrimination you may not think about often, but bad teeth can prevent you from getting a job. This applies to people with crooked or discolored teeth, not just those who are missing teeth of have visible decay. While some employers will consciously pass over a more qualified applicant because they do not want someone with bad teeth representing their business, far more make subconscious assumptions about people based on the look of their teeth.

Not only can unattractive teeth cost you a job, they can also cost you a promotion and affect your earning potential overall. Studies have found that people make very negative assumptions about people who have visible dental flaws, in job interviews and socially. A 2012 study by Kelton Research found that people with straight teeth are more likely to be perceived as being:

·         Happier
·         In good health
·         Successful
·         Surrounded by loved ones
·         Wealthy
·         Smart
·         Trustworthy

In fact, the study found that 73% of people were more likely to trust someone with straight teeth than crooked teeth.

In this particular study the subjects were shown digitally altered photos, and did not interact with the people they were judging. In real life, a crooked or unattractive smile can cause you to make an even worse impression by refraining from smile and generally lacking self-confidence.
